In 2012, the Design-Build team of DSI and Menefee Architecture provided a comprehensive design directive and master plan for Kilpatrick Hall, a mid-century building housing the College of Education at Georgia College and State University. The design objective was to create a more vibrant space to encourage students to inhabit underutilized open spaces and enhance the classroom atmosphere.
The project budget allowed for the implementation of the first phase which included the atrium, the main corridor, an office suite, classrooms, and a student break out lounge. The atrium renovation included minor demolition of extraneous materials, new lighting, and carpeting over pavers to reduce the noise level in the two-story space. Two interior windows that were boarded and covered by a wall mural were restored to allow natural light from the atrium skylight to filter into the adjacent 2nd-floor classrooms. The rest of the spaces received a finishes makeover. Altogether, the renovated spaces totaled over 6,000 square feet.
